Anti-wrinkle injections are one of the most widely performed aesthetic treatments in the UK — yet for many people, the first appointment still feels like stepping into the unknown. Here is exactly what happens at your first appointment.

Before You Arrive: Preparing for Your Treatment

There is minimal preparation required for anti-wrinkle injections. We ask clients to arrive with clean skin — no heavy makeup where possible — and to avoid alcohol for 24 hours beforehand, as it can increase the risk of bruising. If you take blood-thinning medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or fish oil supplements, please discuss this with your practitioner when you book, as these can also increase bruising. Arnica supplements, taken a few days before treatment, can help minimise bruising if this is a concern.

The Consultation

Every treatment at DZ Beauty begins with a thorough consultation — and this is not a formality. Your practitioner will review your medical history, ask about previous treatments, and discuss your goals in detail. This is your opportunity to share exactly what you do and do not want from your results. We ask questions like: Are you looking to soften existing lines, or prevent new ones forming? Do you want movement preserved, or a smoother, more refreshed appearance? What areas concern you most?

Your face will be assessed at rest and in movement — frowning, raising eyebrows, squinting — to map the muscle activity precisely. Treatment is planned based on your anatomy, not a standard template. Two people with the same concern can require very different injection points and doses.

The Injection Itself

Anti-wrinkle injections use a very fine needle to deliver small amounts of botulinum toxin into targeted facial muscles. The injections are quick — the treatment itself typically takes just 10 to 20 minutes for a standard three-area treatment (forehead, frown lines, and crow's feet). Most clients describe the sensation as a mild pinch or pressure — very brief and entirely manageable. We do not routinely use numbing cream, but it can be applied on request for clients who are particularly sensitive.

Immediately After Treatment

You can leave the clinic and return to normal activities immediately — there is no downtime. The injection sites may show small red dots or mild swelling for a few hours, and some clients experience minor bruising that resolves within a few days. You will not see results immediately. Botulinum toxin takes time to bind to the nerve receptors that signal muscle contraction.

Aftercare Instructions

• Stay upright for 4 hours after treatment — do not lie flat
• Avoid touching, rubbing, or massaging the treated areas for 24 hours
• Do not exercise vigorously or expose the face to extreme heat (saunas, steam rooms, sunbeds) for 24 hours
• Avoid alcohol for 24 hours to reduce bruising risk
• You may apply makeup gently after 4 hours if needed
• Do not have any facial treatments, massage, or laser procedures for 2 weeks

When Will I See Results?

Most clients notice the treatment beginning to take effect within 3 to 5 days. The full result is visible at 2 weeks. We ask all first-time clients to book a review appointment at 2 weeks — this is included in your treatment at DZ Beauty — to assess the results and make any small adjustments if needed. Getting the dose exactly right on the first visit can take a session or two as your practitioner learns how your muscles respond.

What If I Am Not Happy with My Results?

Anti-wrinkle injections are temporary — they will wear off naturally over 3 to 4 months. If you feel the result is too strong or too subtle, your 2-week review is the time to raise this. Practitioners can make targeted touch-up injections at this appointment if needed. Importantly, botulinum toxin cannot be immediately reversed (unlike fillers, which can be dissolved with hyaluronidase), but because it is temporary, any result you are not happy with will resolve on its own.
