Microneedling is one of the most searched-for skin treatments in Birmingham right now — and for good reason. It delivers real, measurable improvements in skin texture, fine lines, scarring, and radiance. But it also raises a lot of questions before people feel ready to book. Here, our practitioners at DZ Beauty in Sutton Coldfield answer every question we are regularly asked.
What Exactly Is Microneedling?
Microneedling uses a device with very fine needles to create controlled micro-channels in the surface of the skin. These tiny injuries trigger the body's natural wound-healing response, producing new collagen and elastin — the proteins responsible for firm, plump, youthful-looking skin. The micro-channels also allow active serums applied during treatment to penetrate far deeper than they would topically.
Does Microneedling Hurt?
This is the question we hear most. The honest answer: it is uncomfortable rather than painful for most clients. We apply a topical numbing cream to the skin around 30 minutes before starting, which significantly reduces sensation. During the treatment, clients describe it as a mild scratching or vibrating feeling — similar to a rough facial massage. Areas like the forehead and around the nose may feel more sensitive. After treatment, the skin typically feels tight and warm, like mild sunburn, for 12 to 24 hours.
How Deep Do the Needles Go?
Needle depth is adjusted based on the area being treated and the concern being addressed. For general skin texture and fine lines, we typically use 0.5 to 1.5 mm depth. For acne scarring or deeper lines, we may go up to 2 mm in thicker skin areas like the cheeks. Our practitioners always calibrate depth carefully — too shallow delivers no collagen stimulus; too deep risks unnecessary trauma. We do not use a one-size-fits-all approach.
What Does Microneedling Treat?
- Fine lines and wrinkles, particularly around the eyes and mouth
- Acne scarring and textured skin
- Enlarged pores
- Uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation
- Loss of firmness and skin laxity
- Stretch marks (with specialist protocols)
- Dull, tired-looking skin
Is Microneedling Safe for Darker Skin Tones?
Yes — and this is one of the reasons microneedling is often preferred over laser treatments for clients with Fitzpatrick skin types IV to VI. Lasers target pigment and carry a risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) in darker skin tones. Microneedling works mechanically rather than via light energy, making it much safer across all skin tones when performed by a properly trained practitioner. At DZ Beauty, we have significant experience treating diverse skin tones and always adapt our approach accordingly.
How Long Does It Take to See Results?
This is where expectations need careful management. Collagen remodelling is a biological process — it does not happen overnight. Most clients notice improved skin texture and a healthy glow within the first week as post-treatment redness subsides. The more significant improvements in fine lines, scars, and firmness typically become visible 4 to 6 weeks after treatment, as new collagen matures. For best results, we recommend a course of 3 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart, with a single maintenance session every 3 to 6 months thereafter.
How Long Is the Downtime?
Expect 24 to 48 hours of redness and mild swelling — most clients look a little flushed on the day of treatment. Some people experience minor peeling or dryness for 3 to 5 days as the skin regenerates. We advise avoiding makeup for 24 hours post-treatment and using only gentle, unfragranced skincare for the first 5 days. Sun exposure and intense exercise should be avoided for 48 hours. Most clients can return to work the next day.
Can Microneedling Be Combined With Other Treatments?
Absolutely — and combining it with the right boosters amplifies results significantly. At DZ Beauty, we offer microneedling with hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, or growth factor serums applied during treatment to enhance hydration and brightening. Some clients also pair a course of microneedling with Jalupro skin booster injections for a comprehensive collagen-stimulation and hydration protocol. Our practitioners will advise the best combination for your specific goals.
Who Should Not Have Microneedling?
- Active acne, open wounds, or skin infections in the treatment area
- Those on blood-thinning medication (consult your GP first)
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- History of keloid scarring
- Current use of isotretinoin (Roaccutane) — wait 6 months after stopping
- Certain autoimmune conditions — always disclose your full medical history
