First-time waxing clients at DZ Beauty in Sutton Coldfield often have the same question: is there anything I need to do before I come in? Yes — and the right preparation makes a real difference to your comfort level, the quality of your result, and how your skin feels afterwards. Here is the complete guide.
Hair Length: The Most Important Factor
Hair needs to be at least 5 mm long for wax to grip it effectively — roughly two weeks of growth after shaving. Too short and the wax cannot hold the hair, resulting in patchy removal and a poor result. Too long (more than 1.5 cm) and the wax can be more uncomfortable. If you are unsure, it is always better to err on the side of slightly longer. We can trim if needed at your appointment.
What to Do Before Your Appointment
- Gently exfoliate the area 24 to 48 hours before your appointment — not on the day — to free any buried hairs
- Arrive with clean, dry skin free of oils, heavy moisturisers, and fake tan
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing over the area being waxed — tight clothing post-wax can cause irritation
- Take a paracetamol 30 minutes before if you are concerned about discomfort — this can take the edge off
- Stay hydrated — well-hydrated skin responds better to waxing
What to Avoid Before Your Appointment
- Sunbeds, tanning booths, or prolonged sun exposure in the 24 hours before treatment
- Self-tan or fake tan products — these can interfere with wax adhesion
- Retinol or AHA/BHA acid products in the area for 48 hours before waxing, as these thin the skin
- Caffeine in the hour before intimate waxing — it can heighten sensitivity
- Alcohol for 24 hours before — alcohol thins the blood and increases skin sensitivity
- Booking just before your period — hormone changes make skin more sensitive in the days leading up to menstruation
What to Do After Your Appointment
In the 24 to 48 hours following your wax, avoid heat, friction, and anything that might irritate freshly open follicles: hot baths, saunas, swimming pools, intense exercise, and tight clothing. Apply a soothing, fragrance-free lotion or aloe vera gel to calm any redness. After 48 hours, begin gentle exfoliation two to three times per week to prevent ingrown hairs — this is the single most effective thing you can do to maintain smooth, clear skin between appointments.
