If you have ever been told "it gets easier" before a waxing appointment, you probably assumed it was just something therapists say to stop you backing out. But it is genuinely true — and there are real, physiological reasons why regular waxing becomes progressively more comfortable. Here is the science, explained by our therapists at DZ Beauty in Sutton Coldfield.
Why the First Wax Hurts the Most
On your first waxing appointment, hair is removed from follicles that have never been waxed before. These follicles are at their strongest — the hair shaft is thick, the follicle bulb is firmly anchored, and the surrounding tissue offers significant resistance to the hair being pulled from the root. Additionally, if you have previously shaved, the hair tends to be coarser and blunter at the tip (shaving does not thin hair, but it does create a blunt cross-section), which can mean more resistance during removal.
What Happens to Follicles with Regular Waxing
With each subsequent waxing session, the follicle is progressively weakened. The hair root becomes less firmly anchored in the follicle, and the hair shaft itself becomes finer as repeated trauma to the follicle gradually impairs its ability to produce thick, strong hair. After 6 to 12 months of regular waxing, many clients notice hair regrowth is noticeably thinner, softer, and sparser — which means less resistance during removal and a significantly more comfortable experience.
The Role of Timing and Hair Growth Cycles
Hair grows in cycles — anagen (growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (rest). Wax is most effective and least uncomfortable when hair is in the anagen phase, at around 5 mm of length. When clients maintain a consistent 4 to 6 week waxing schedule, they align their appointments with the optimal point in the hair cycle. Inconsistent scheduling — leaving 10 to 12 weeks between appointments — means encountering hair at different growth stages and losing the cumulative softening benefit.
How to Make Each Session More Comfortable
- Keep appointments consistent — 4 to 6 weeks apart maintains follicle softening
- Exfoliate gently between sessions to prevent ingrown hairs and keep skin smooth
- Avoid booking around your period when skin sensitivity is elevated
- Take a paracetamol 30 minutes before if needed — it genuinely helps
- Hydrate well before and after appointments — dehydrated skin holds hair more firmly
- Relax during the treatment — tensing muscles increases discomfort significantly
